Hi, have seen this morning, a brownish small pigeon sized bird which was hopping on grass beside farmland and in flight has a large white patch on its back at the base of its tail.  Have tried various books and online and can find nothing to match. Has anyone any ideas please?

Difficult to tell by description only but it could be a wheatear.

I should have added 'female' as the male northern wheatear has a much more colourful plumage. They are visitors to the UK and arrive early spring.

Thank you.  Have looked at a Wheatear photo on the RSPB site and this bird did not look like that.  It was all over brownish, bigger than a blackbird and smaller than pigeon.  The white patch was at the base of the tail and bottom of the back, visible in flight.  I did not get a photo as was just observing and noting how different it looked to usual birds and it flew off.
