I walk a lot along our Devon lanes and every now and then a bird will suddenly fly up out of the ditch with a whir of wings and take off at enormous speed, sometimes with one short alarm call.It happens so fast that I can never get a good look at it. It flies with very fast wingbeats but quickly disappears. When it first happened I thought it was a snipe, yet I didn't see a long beak so I wasn't sure. Today it happened again but this time I definitely got a flash of black and white (in the past, it has always been a blur). It is a medium-sized bird. Always solitary and always appears out of a ditch, whizzes off at lightning speed and usually in a straight line across the nearest field and is gone from sight in a fraction of a second..
