Hi. I just joined bird id as we have spotted a bird in the garden that I am not sure is a native wild bird in England. It was just smaller than a pigeon and had a slightly flattened beak. The interesting part was the blue and black feathers at the base of its wings. Initially I thought it looked like a kookubura (obviously it wasn't) and my stepdad thought it was a cuckoo but it was too brilliantly coloured to be one of those. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks to queries further down your page, I've been able to confirm this is a jay. Interesting that neither myself nor my mum were able to name it despite having over 100 years between us in this country.
