Walking beside a brook on The Wirral, Merseyside earlier today a strange looking bird landed not too far from me. Details are very sketchy as it was raining and I had my hood up. From the back it appeared to have a grey body. It stayed on the ground for a short while. It had a distinctive yellow face with a tufted head. My first thought was it was a 'funny' looking bird. I'm guessing it was about 15cm long. There was another mark on its face, maybe red but it happened so quickly. I have plenty of birds in my back garden as I look out onto farmland but I have never seen one like this before. I also wondered if it could be an escaped pet bird. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Think it may well have been a cockatiel.
