Hi Marjorie

This is a Common Merganser. Quite a large bird, superbly adapted to diving (note the strong tail that it uses to guide its' path under the water). Merganser have unique tooth-like serrations along the edge of the bill that help them to grasp slippery fish.

The Common Merganser is not so common, I have never heard of them but I will now go and find out some information about them.
