I wonder if this was a Starling, Dorothy. I am sure you are familiar with them and they are black with a yellow beak and smaller than a Blackbird. They do not have white on their heads but in bright sunlight their glossy feathers may appear white. As you will know there can be quite a variation in their plumage in different lights but in sunshine they can be stunning.
