I do not recognise this as a woodpecker.  I do not know where you saw this bird but from the description I wonder if you got a sighting of a rare visitor called a Hoopoe.  It is the between a Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker in size.  It has a pinky-brown head, chest and shoulders.  The wings are black & buff barred, which may possibly appear bronze in some light.  It has a longer (more curved) beak than a woodpecker and a buff crest than can be raised.  They are occasional visitors to the UK in spring and autumn.
