I saw this bird yesterday around 6pm flying over an inland lake in Northumberland. I have searched the web but cannot find what it is. The face is very distinctive and red. This is the best photo I have of it. It was quite a way off and I am guessing the wing span was about 120cm.

That looks like some sort of gull to me, the wing and bill shapes are correct, and the colors are perfect for a gull too. google it and please tell me if I am wrong.

Hi Jade132213, thanks - yes after googling it I thought it was a gull but the red face had me confused. There are no red faced gulls are there?

It's possible that the red face is merely the remains of its last meal. Gulls are not afraid of eating carrion.
