I had this at marshside, southport today and i reallywant it to be a water pipit. It does have a stripe above the eye and a plale belly, which improves its chances but i'm aweful with pipits and larks so i would like a comfirmation/second opinion.

I agree the pipits are near impossible to identify without a good sighting or clear photo, Jacko.  It is hard to be sure from the photo but it does look like a Water Pipit with the white throat and eye markings.  A skylark's eyes seem to bulge head on with a distinct eye ring but the bird in the photo appears to have a stripe above and below rather like a number of pipits.  Generally I find Meadow Pipits are darker than Water Pipits and like Skylarks they have speckled bibs.  Sorry I cannot be more confident.
