Hi, I saw a small finch sized bird in my back garden on the grass but as I reached for my camera it flew off, hence no photo. It had a blue and a red patch on its cheek/neck, was a browny grey colour and I'm sure it had yellow/black feathers either on its folded back wings or tails feathers. I have searched google and various other sites but cannot find anything that looks like this.

Thanks in advance.

That description sounds like a Goldfinch except for the blue markings. Google it and let us know.

Regards

It's not a Goldfinch. I've searched wild canaries, wagtails, tits, finches, buntings etc etc. African, European, Mediterranean and north European birds. I cannot find anything with thos markings. I tried to look up Avary birds but I think maybe a book would be better to search through. It landed on the grass right in front of the window I got a good look at it's face and as I reached for my camera it flew off. I've never seen anything like it.
